I think that many people spend their hard earned money on computer hardware, then become frustrated to find that all of todays software is going to cost a fortune to buy and install.
Of course, you dont need to spend at all if you know that a Freeware alternative is available to download online.
Many software companys and programmers also agree.. Open Source, Freeware, Giftware and demos are abundant on the internet, and free to download and use (usualy for non comercial use) hence many areas of this site become possible.
Wouldn´t it be nice if you could just get the right software to use at home, from the internet.
So armed with a list of search engines, I set off around the net to find some freeware for the non comercial user that may ease both the headache and pocket.
The site is written from scratch using a combination of HTML, PHP and a little Javascript. It also sports a Mysql Database backend for the software listings.
All the concept and design is by baccaruda although some content is not (eg PIRC IRC client is a freeware application).
The hosting is provided free by Pandela (www.pandela.com).
Many of my friends have also offered me free hosting on their servers for this site, I have however, had to decline (graciously I hope ). The reasons for this, not to be ungreatful,
is that I wish this site to demonstrate the generousity of the internet communities.
Therefor this site has to be hosted by a provider that is accessable to everyone for free, in keeping with the theme of
this site.
I wish whole-heartedly however to thank you all for your offers of free hosting.
On a more commercial note: This site forms part of my portfolio, should you or your company wish to employ my services in design or build of your projects feel free to contact me.
The first project I was involved with online was back around 1995, a good friend of mine asked me to help with graphics for a mod pack. It was for a well known commercial game.
I needed a name at the time to release my work under, and as it was more common back in those days to use a nickname.
The word baccaruda was in my head as it featured in a song I used to listen to alot when I was younger. The sample was, I later discovered, originaly from a 1960's car advert for the plymouth barracuda.
There are more than one baccaruda's online I discovered, so my full title is phish_baccaruda (the phish bit refers to some silly tricks I used to play involving payphones!).
however nowadays most of my friends call me bacc.
I am a domestic engineer, or I´m the one at home with the children. I use my programming skills to write computer games Games for the children and chat over IRC.
I have a regular DJ spot on Boomfm You can catch my show Fridays, 22:00 and I play until 02:00.
Plans for the site:
My overall plan still is very hazy... thats probably the late hour (again!)
Seriously though, I get asked alot to help out with problems ppl are having with thier compys. I aim to provide some methods to ease you, the readers, towards free software,
as well as cleaner and safer computing tips.
Prehaps as a showcase for a couple of programs too (if I ever get one finished!).
